The story behind the image
Old images can be proof for change (or lack of it) and can become like a poor-man’s version of a time machine.
This image, for example. is from a large slide lot with images from the 1950s and 1960s, all coming from one family (which is rare.) In this photo, a young woman, probably the daughter of the family, poses at the small harbour of Portofino, Italy. In the back we see 20+ traditional fishing boats.
And guess what? The only thing that has changed since 1958 – when this photo was taken – is the style of the boats! Everything else seems to have survived more or less unchanged. The tiny harbour is still packed with boats while the streets are packed with tourists. The buildings in the back, at the Piazza Martiri dell’Olivetta, have been renovated but have not lost their appeal.
Which makes this town special. Here, it seems, the times are changing – not! 🙂
