The story behind the image

Old images – I love them. They are proof for change. They can be like a time machine that enables to travel back in time for a few moments.

Take this image, for example. Like all posts this week, it is from the large lot of slides from 1955 to 1963. The image shows the beach of the town Sestri Levante in Italy. The photographer apparently spent the afternoon and evening here, and he could enjoy the warm sunlight of the afternoon and the approaching sunset.

I think you can guess the massive change from 1958 to today already. It’s not the buildings – these are almost as they were back then. It’s not the trees either. These have grown and seem to block the view on some of the buildings, but it is not a significant change. The massive change are the fishing boats. Today, they are not pulled to the beach anymore, at least during high season, and the few that still exist rest on a small stretch at the end of the beach (behind the photographer.)

Almost the entire beach has been covered by commercial ‘bagnos’ (private baths) that rent umbrellas and sunchairs. There are a few areas that are considered ‘free beaches’ where you can place your blanket when you want to take a swim, but the rest of the bay is commercial territory.

The times, they are changing. 🙂
