The story behind the image
This image (from the large lot of slides I acquired last week) shows a woman posing for the photographer. The caption says ‘Cattolica’, and the name of the lady is ‘Erika’.
I think it is awesome. Really. It’s easy to envision this image as a cover photo for the popular fashion magazines of the period.
However, it took me a while to get that image to the state you see above, because the piece of film was locked inside a glass frame that was damaged beyond repair.

To get to the actual film I had to carefully cut open three of the four sides which were covered on all four edges by strong adhesive tape. Then I removed a lightweight cardboard frame that carried the image and handwritten notes. Within that frame, the piece of film was fixed with adhesive tape (again!) Sadly, I was unable to remove some portions of that adhesive. It seems that the photographer really wanted to protect this image forever. And I understand him. I would have protected such a gem as well. How could he know that almost 70 years later some chap would want to digitally remaster his image?
Once liberated, the full beauty of the image was visible, and it required very little editing.
I love almost everything about the image: her confident, determined look straight into the camera, full of energy, her pale complexion and decent makeup, her outfit, and the maritime setting. Not a big fan of the light pole in the background but this can be removed, see below.

Really, I totally love it. Magic.
