The story behind the image
Following the death of my grandfather Otto in 1956, the house of the family in Kiel Wik in Germany got too big and too expensive. My grandmother decided to sell it and move to a large appartment closer to the city center and the family-owned store. The appartment was located in Schillerstrasse 13 in Kiel, right in front of the popular Schrevenpark with its large pond and extended greens.
My mother took a number of images of the appartment in January 1963, probably using her brand new Kodak Retinette 1B camera she received on Christimas 1962.
My mother captured a number of photos showing the appartment. These images seem to be dull upon first glance, but I think they provide a unique insight into the lifestyle of a (somewhat) wealthy family in the early 1960s in Germany. We should also consider the fact that most of the items on the image are gone today – the furniture, the books, even the lamps. There is a tiny chance that the paintings have survived, somewhere.
It is an exciting document that helped me understanding the way my mom and her family lived back then (before I was born.)
