The story behind the image
From the age of 7, my mother had been a horse riding fan. She began by riding ponies at the beach of St. Peter Ording in Northern Germany and continued until the early 1960s.
This photo by sports photographer Herbert Wiessner shows her during a horse riding competition in Preetz, Germany, located south-west of Kiel.
The photo shows a bit of motion blur, but still it is an amazing shot considering that it is from 1958. Just think of it: the photographer was using film as digital photography was still science fiction back then! He had just this one opportunity and had to nail the perfect moment, otherwise he’d have no photo. Of course, he could not shoot in burst mode (10 frames per second, or more) like we do today. He did not have autofocus. OK, most certainly he was using a tripod and a cable release, but even this setup required a very good sense of the timing as the couple approached.
