The story behind the image
A while ago, I re-discovered analog photography with old cameras. It began by the desire to not just look at and edit photos from the past but to refresh the memories of the photographic experience. You see, I started photography as a boy in the 1970s. And I used the camera of my mother.
Today, I know that it was a Kodak Retinette 1B Type 045. But at first I purchased just a Retinette 1B and only realized there were different types of Retinette cameras available, and the one I purchased was a Type 037, an earlier variant of the Type 045.
When preparing to sell the Type 037 camera, I inserted a fresh b&w negative film – the excellent AgfaPhoto APX 100 – and did a couple of lacklustre test shots. So, it took me about a year to finish off that film. Now I got it back from the lab and am quite pleased.
What can I say? The exposure meter delivers credible results, the shutter works well, the aperture seems to work OK, and the lens delivers sharp images. I did not test the flash, exposure time ‘B’, and the self-exposure function.
I present this image almost unedited, almost straight from the negative scan – see above.
If you’re interested in purchasing the camera, just let me know.
