The story behind the image
Here is an original photo print from a small set of images that mostly cover the heavy winter in Kiel 1928/29. However, this image clearly was shot in sping or autumn as the people wear relatively light clothes. The trees in the back carry no leafs but there is no snow or ice.
The fish auction hall had been constructed in 1909/1910 to offer a convenient, weather-safe place for buyers and sellers. Before, the fish could be purchased on the street near the piers. The auction hall was soon too small, and the business extended to the street again.
The hall survived WW2 without damages, but after the war it was still too small. A new, much larger market – the Sea Fish Market – was built in 1948 on the other side of the city which attracted a lot of business. The future of the auction hall was uncertain. In 1966, there were plans to replace the building by a park garage but the Heritage Protection Authority stopped the project.
Since 1978 it is home to the Kieler Schifffahrtsmuseum (Kiel Maritime Museum).
