The story behind the image
As you know, I like to share antique photos from my collection. Here’s yet another undated cabinet photo showing a couple, probably husband and wife, as they pose for a portrait in the photo studio of Albert Giesler, one of the encumbent photographers in Eutin, Germany.
As so often, there is no additional context available. No names. No dates. Zilch.
What I really like about this portrait is the fact that Albert Giesler tried variants of his portrait style. He used props (in this case books), the people show almost natural poses (well, as much as the clothes allow anyway.) It certainly does not have the passport-photo appeal that was still in high demand by the customers. It is an artistic variant. I like that.
Looking at the clothes, I’d estimate the shooting date to be 1902 with a range of +/- 2 years. Of course, this is just an educated guess.
Whatever. Even if I don’t know who they are, and when the image was shot, I just love the portrait.
