The story behind the image
As soon as we had checked-in at our hotel in Las Vegas – the Treasure Island – we went on a discovery walk. First we went for the huge installation of the original pirate show right in front of the hotel. The Battle of Buccaneer Bay had been a key attraction since 1993, and we were eager to see it in the evening.
My photo shows the location where the show would take place: Sirens’ Cove (the village of the pirates) and the old battle ship which had been moored in front of the village. In the back, the majestic Treasure Island hotel raises into the clear blue sky. Awesome!
Except, there would be no pirate show in the evening, because the water had been removed from the basin, and the ship was dry in the dock. So I tried to find this angle to avoid this fact. I would have loved to get a slightly wider shot but that would have revealed that there was no water and the whole setup was artificial.
By the way, the pirate shows were discontinued in 2013 when parts of the artificial lagoon and stage were transformed into retail space. The ship and a piece of Sirens’ Cove are still visible but there is currently no live pirate show like there used to be.
