The story behind the image
Snow and ice are ubiquitous in Helsinki, Finland, during the winter. The big harbour can freeze all over, and just the main route for the big ships will be kept free by ice breakers. This was an unusual sight for us, as we are used to winters with snow and (moderately) cold temperatures – but not as heavy as in Helsinki!
On one extremely cold morning we took the passenger ferry to Suomenlinna, a former fortress island. Somewhere on the way back I captured this photo of people walking on the frozen Baltic Sea near Havshamnen. I could not find where I took the photo, exactly, but the houses center left are clearly the ones in Merikatu, and the unique twin towers of the Johanneksenkirkko add another reference point.
Helsinki in winter? An amazing experience!
