The story behind the image

While we spent our summer vacation in Grömitz, Germany, we had the pleasure of attending a historic car show in town. The organizers had pulled together more than 300 stunning cars which filled three greens right next to the beach. Of course, this provided me with countless photo opportunities.

My image shows a beautiful turquoise 1959 Ford Galaxie Sunliner Convertible. You see, the late 1950s and 1960s were all about space. Rockets to the stars, space travel, and conquering the moon. Car manufacturers followed this trend and their cars started to look like rockets or spaceships, suggesting speed and a bright future.

Of course, today we know that the mileage was, er, not ideal. Equipped with the typical V8 engines these models had a very high fuel consumption, which, depending on driving style and engine, was often over 20 liters per 100 kilometers (approx. 11-15 MPG US gallons).

Well, well. But they weree certainly a joy to look at. Back then, and today.
