The story behind the image
When in Rome, you are probably going to visit the Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II (also known as Vittoriano). It is a symbol for the Italian unification and home to the Tomb of the Italian Unknown Soldier and the ethernal flame. Conveniently located in the city center, many attractions are nearby. What’s more, you can enjoy nice views of Rome from this elevated location.
My photo shows the ancient Mercati di Traiano (in the back) and the Foro di Traiano (at the bottom of the image.) The forum was built at the beginning of the 2nd century AD, but all that can be seen today are just a few pillars of the Basilica Ulpia and the Colonna di Traiano (Trajan’s Column).
I think that having such old documents of civilization right in the middle of a large city is truly exciting.
