The story behind the image
To this day, Elvis’ BMW 507 is considered one of the most famous automobiles of its time. Elvis Presley acquired the used car in Germany in December 1958, shortly after beginning his military service, and drove it until he left Germany in March 1960.
Since 2023, the white icon has a found its place of honor at the BMW Museum in Munich, Germany. Presented in its own room, designed as an Elvis tribute, and with additional illustrations of the car’s journey and history, visitors get insights into the stages the BMW 507 has gone through over more than 50 years. An information panel designed to resemble a jukebox illustrates the history of the extensive restoration project undertaken by BMW Group Classic.
In the 2000s, the BMW 507 was rediscovered in San Francisco on the pumpkin farm of classic car collector Jack Castor. BMW Group Classic brought the car back to Munich in 2014 and restored it to its original condition in a two year project.
Further information can be found here. The full story of the car is here.
The BMW Museum is well worth a visit. It is located right next to the BMW Welt which serves as a giant brand experience center, complete with showroom and delivery center. If you want to dive deeper into the history of BMW, the museum is a must-see for you. It covers the entire spectrum of the company, from the beginnings to current and future models and technologies. Time-limited exhibitions illustrate special-interest topics, e.g. the influence of Italian designers on BMW and cars in general.
My photo shows Elvis’ 507 as exhibited in its own room at the museum.
Exciting, just like the entire museum.
