The story behind the image
The month of June 2006 was dominated (alas in Germany) by the soccer world championship. You simply could not withdraw from this event (in Germany). So, what could be better to visit a soccer match of the tournament? Well, to visit a soccer match of the German team!
This is what I did on 20th June, joined by a friend and colleague of mine. We had received tickets for the match Ecuador vs. Germany in Berlin. Wow.
We turned this into an event and flew in early that day (from Munich), taking our time to visit Berlin. I had been to Berlin before, but never long enough to really get acquainted with the city (and this time it would be no difference.) But heck, we hopped on a sightseeing bus and enjoyed the drive through the city. The match would kick off at 4 pm, so we had plenty of time.
Of course, the sightseeing tour also stopped at the prestigious Kurfürstendamm, the ‘High Street’ of Berlin. Right next to the Kurfürstendamm was the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche. It had been heavily damaged during WW2 and never restored. The churchtower remained as a memorial against the war. As always, Wikipedia knows much more (in German.) The church has also its own homepage (in German.)
