The story behind the image
My grandparents lived in Schönwalde am Bungsberg in Germany from about 1908 to 1933. My grandfather Paul Gehring worked as a ranger for the forests of the court of Oldenburg. When he had to retire early (in October 1932) they had to move out of their home in the town.
However, during the 25 years they spent in Schönwalde, the church was an important place for the small family:
- My grandmother Edith was confirmed here on 28th March 1920, and she got married to my grandfather, Otto Schweim, here on 1st June 1923.
- My great aunt Irmgard was confirmed here on 9th April 1922, and she got married to Arthur Wilke here on 10th June 1926.
So you can imagine my excitement when I visited the church of Schönwalde last summer. Standing exactly where Edith and Irmgard got married was a wonderful experience.
Inspiring.
