The story behind the image
Yesterday I shared an exciting image showing the life on the family farm in Hödingen near Lake Constance in southern Germany in the 1930s. Here’s an image that shows Petra’s grandfather Paul as a trainee to become a butcher.
Reportedly his uncle, Gerhard Gorber, had suggested this career path with the option of taking over his butchery in Überlingen which is just a stone-throw from Hödingen, because there was no son in sight who could possibly inherit the butchery and continue the business. And so, Paul (and probably his father) decided that he would become a butcher. In one of those strange windings of life, Gerhard and his wife got a son – Karl – and Paul’s option to take over the butchery was withdrawn.
Paul continued the training, became a master butcher and found his wide – and happiness – in Birkenfeld (Nahe) where he ran his own butchery until the 1970s.
