The story behind the image

Here’s an undated cabinet photo that was part of the Schütze-Oßwald lot I acquired a while ago. This studio portrait was shot by Gustav Howe in Braunschweig where he has been mentioned in regional address books between approximately 1885 and 1895.

The clothes of the lady seem to be a good match for this period, too, nailing the production date to ‘around 1890’. As so often, no further contextually relevant information is given – no date stamp and no personal note.

For enthusiasts of antique images, here’s a 1:1 comparison between the unedited, color-calibrated cabinet photo and its digitally re-mastered version.

As the research does not reveal any further personal information about the lady on the photograph, I just leave it as it is – a unique piece of early photographic art.

Lovely.

Finally, here is the backside. I just love the (usually) beautiful artwork that the photographers used to promote their businesses.
