The story behind the image
As you may know, I am originally from Northern Germany, a region that you can safely call ‘flat’. Before I moved to Munich in 1996 I had been just once to the Alps (to learn skiing as part of a school program), so my experience with mountains was basically zero. Frankly, I was not keen on experiencing the mountains, and I did not do many hikes once I had settled in Munich. Mountains? That’s for the folks from Bavaria, I thought.
However, Petra introduced me to hiking, and I really began to like it, actually. On a particularly beautiful day in autumn 2000 we took the cable car up to the Kreuzeckhaus and did a short hike along the Hochalmweg towards the – you guessed it – Hochalm. (And no, I wouldn’t call this a ‘hike’ today.)
My picture shows the Kreuzeckhaus sitting on top of the mountain, with the huge plains of the pre-Alps area as a backdrop.
