The story behind the image
As you may know, our family had always been fond of St. Peter Ording in Northern Germany. I found images in the archive that date back to 1943. Here’s a more recent image from our trip to the North Sea in 2007.
Obviously, March was too early (and thus too cold) in the year for taking a bath in the North Sea. Apart from this, the water was simply not present, thanks to ebb tide. So we did what the others did and roamed the huge beach. One morning a small group of beach sailor trainees occupied the space north of the sea pier. The solid ground of the large sandbank is perfect for trainings, especially when noone else is around. It was exciting to see the fragile vehicles speed along the beach.
