The story behind the image

Yesterday I picked up our Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon from maintenance. I had to wait a few minutes and enjoyed looking at the countless old and new Alfas on the backyard of the car repair shop.

And there it was – a brand new Alfa Romeo Junior. Not only was it (almost) brand new, but also model I had seen on images but not yet in the wild. Wikipedia has more information on the Junior (in German.)

I think the design is well done, especially the front section. It shows the historical Alfa Romeo ’rounded’ badge, prominently applied to the unique V-shape of the air intake at the radiator grille. This builds the link back to the roots of Alfa Romeo.

Here is the badge on a restored Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 from the early 1930s. I spotted that beautiful car in 2013 in Lazise, Lago di Garda.

I guess the designers had been considering the revival of the rounded logo for a long while but did not have properly matching models. I think it’s great that they finally found a place on the Junior.

Lovely.
