The story behind the image
This is the third image of a mini-series showing the large family appartment where the Schweim family (Edith, Editha and Inga) lived from about 1957 to 1965. The appartment was located in the Schillerstrasse 13 in Kiel, Germany, and was closer to the city center and the two family-owned stores. The popular Schrevenpark with its large pond and extended greens was right in front of the building.
My mother took a number of images of the appartment in January 1963, probably using her brand new Kodak Retinette 1B camera she received on Christimas 1962.
While these images seem to be dull upon first glance, I think they provide unique insights into the lifestyle of a (somewhat) wealthy family in the early 1960s in Germany. We should also consider the fact that most of the items on the image are gone today – the furniture, the books, even the lamps. There is a tiny chance that the paintings have survived, somewhere.
