The story behind the image
As you know, I like to share antique photos from my archive. Here’s a cabinet photo showing a beautiful young lady of maybe 20 years who poses in a studio in front of a painted background next to a low brick fence (which is probably fake.) She holds a closed umbrella in her right hand and one of her gloves in her left hand. The photographer: Albert Giesler, one of the encumbent photographers in Eutin, Germany.
Giesler most likely shot this image around 1895, because he used already the title of ‘Photographer at Court’ (‘Hofphotograph’ in German) and promoted just the silver medal he won at the 1892 exhibition in Flensburg. He continously participated in such exhibitions and collected a lot of medals which he also mentioned on the back of the photos. Not here. Just Flensburg is mentioned. So it is likely to be from 1894 or 1895.
The quality of this cabinet photo is stunning. It is in superb condition with almost no scratches or spots. What’s more, Giesler nailed the focus perfectly on the eyes. The brooch closure at her neck, however, is already slightly blurred (due to the wide open aperture, I assume.) The exposure is well balanced, and even the original cabinet photo is a joy to look at.
I just love it.
