The story behind the image
Our first trip to southern Africa was coming to an end as we were to depart from Cape Town for our flight home. At the airport, while waiting for boarding, I captured this beautiful image of D-ABTF, a Lufthansa Boeing 737-400.
This huge plane had its first flight back in March 1991 and served Lufthansa for about 25 years. Then, in January 2016, it showed up at Mojave Commercial Airliner Storage in California, which is used for both long-term storage of aircraft and dismantling/scrapping. Some aircraft, however, are refurbished and returned to active service, while others are restored for museums or are mothballed.
Sadly, it seems that D-ABTF got ultimately dismantled for parts and recycling at the site. See the most recent photos at jetphotos.com.
