The story behind the image
Finally it’s all coming together. Here’s another gentleman who is part of our family tree: Hermann Lichtenberger. The image is part of the lot I received from a relative who has lots of old family photos. I asked her to send the ones that she believes to be most useful for our archive. (She sent 43 awesome photos, but she did not realize that backs of the photos had remains of double sided stickers. She put the stack of photos into an envelope and sent it by mail. Sadly, some of the images stuck together during the transport. Oh my! I carefully separated the images and repaired the few remaining damages digitally.)
I do not know a lot about Hermann Lichtenberger (yet.) He was a goldsmith and belonged to a family of goldsmiths in Idar-Oberstein. I still don’t know his date of birth, nor his date of death, and not even when he got married. But I do know that he married Emma Nagel from Birkenfeld, most likely in 1902 or 1903, because their son Hermann was born in 1904. In November 1908, their daughter Else Friedericke followed (the grandmother of Petra.)
This image was probably shot around the year 1900, and little is known about the photographer, Alexander Schmidt in Idar-Oberstein, one of the encumbent portrait photographers in the area at the time.
