The story behind the image
A truly essential stop on our way from Victoria heading north was Duncan, situated about 60 km north of Victoria. It’s a large community with plenty of opportunities for shopping. It’s key attraction, however, is the Cowichan Valley Museum in the center and the countless totem poles across the town underlining that Duncan is also known as The City Of Totem Poles.
I found this totem – “Transformation In Life” – right next to the museum which is also the former railway station. It was carved in 1987 by Harvey Alphonse and Nelson Canute of the Cowichan Tribes. I opted for a close-up shot as I was attracted by the bright orange and symmetry of the eagles’ beak and the cute look of the carved bird. Read more about this totem at Duncan Sightseeing.
The museum is operated by the Cowichan Historical Society and presents the rich history of the area inside. From here, you can take a trail explaining the historic background of totem poles.
