The story behind the image
For our 2006 trip to Namibia, Petra had booked an excellent lodge – the Etosha-Aoba-Lodge – for our night before entering the Etosha National Park from the eastern entrance (the “Von Lindquist Gate”). Back then, they did offer “sundowner” trips on their property, and they were performed by the owner, Georg.
Georg had immigrated to Namibia in 1993 after having run the IT department of the trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany. He built up the lodge and retired in 2003. His 7,000 ha property is now home to plenty of animals. And while Georg drove us slowly through his “garden”, as he called it, we suddenly encountered zebras on the road! Wow.
And then, just a minute later, we discovered Peggy – one of the many resident giraffes on his property. We were stunned by the beauty of the animal and by the fact that Georg could apparently knew all his giraffes by name. But he smiled and said, “well, I call all my giraffes Peggy, because that was one of the sentences I started my English lessons with – ‘This is Peggy, the giraffe.'” 🙂
Since our visit in 2006, the Etosha Aoba Lodge has merged with several adjacent properties and is now called the Onguma Forest Camp, part of a huge private game reserve. It is most certainly worth considering for your night before entering Etosha.
