The story behind the image

The month of June 2006 was dominated (alas in Germany) by the soccer world championship. You simply could not withdraw from this event (in Germany). So, what could be better to visit a soccer match of the tournament? Well, to visit a soccer match of the German team!

This is what I did on 20th June, joined by a friend and colleague of mine. We had received VIP tickets for the match Ecuador vs. Germany in Berlin. “VIP tickets” meant seats with an excellent view and some nice food during the halftime break. Wow.

We made an event out of this event and flew in early that day (from Munich), taking our time to visit Berlin. I had been to Berlin before, but never long enough to really get acquainted with the city (and this time it would be no difference.) But heck, we hopped on a sightseeing bus and enjoyed the drive through the city. The match would kick off at 4 pm, so we had plenty of time.

One stop brought us to the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz with its large sphere. The large ball houses a bar as well as a restaurant that slowly rotates, offering a 360-degree view of the city. Further up is an observation deck. (Not for me, anyway, as I am afraid of heights.)

For the soccer championship the large ball had been painted in a design resembling a soccer ball with magenta patches. (Magenta is the color of Deutsche Telekom, a pupular telecomms provider.)

P.S.: Germany won that match 3:0 and closed the group phase of the tournament as winner of group A. This created even more buzz for the German team, but the dream of winning the championship in country did not come true in the end. Looking back, I still think it’s fair to say that June/July 2006 had been an awesome time in Germany.
