The story behind the image

Back in 2007 I was excited to capture the (then) brand new Airbus A380 during its visit to Munich. I was ahead of time and took several images of the planes arriving and departing.

Here is an image of D-AIPA, a Lufthansa Airbus A320-200 that waited for the clearance to access Munich runway 08R for take-off. I love the way the nose had been painted! Lufthansa had created several custom paints to support the World Soccer Championships 2006 in Germany. And this plane had a soccer ball painted on its nose! Admittedly, the photo was shot in March 2007 when the championship was already history, but I guess it takes a while to do a re-paint of the nose. What’s more, Germany is known to be a country of soccer fans, so it does not look weird at all to the typical German traveller.

D-AIPA, by the way, went by the name of Buxtehude, a town in Lower Saxonia in Germany. It got delivered to Lufthansa in October 1989 and served the airline for 30 years before it was broken up in 2020. See its full history and more images at planespotters.net.

Wikipedia has an excellent article on the Airbus A320 family.
