The story behind the image

Rimini in Italy is best known for its long beaches and movie celebrities, and its historic town center is very attractive and well worth a visit.

This image shows the ancient bridge Ponte di Augusto e Tiberio. Construction of the bridge began under Augustus (in 14 AD) and was completed under his successor Tiberius in 21 AD. As always, Wikipedia knows a lot more (in Italian.)

I think it’s amazing that a bridge built more than 2,000 years ago is still strong enough to serve as a bridge for traffic. In World War II, the bridge got damaged and had to be repaired after the war. In the 1950s, the bridge was still a key structure for transport in the city, with the ongoing restoration work being a visible symbol of Rimini’s post-war recovery and connection to its past.

Today, the bridge is not used for regular traffic anymore – just for pedestrians and bicycles but it could still hold cars and trucks if needed.

I’d call this brilliant architecture of the past!
