The story behind the image
Florence for sure is on of the most photographed cities in the world. Its heritage and outright beauty makes it a wonderful destination for countless tourists from around the world. Including us.
This makes it difficult to capture new and unique views. That morning we got up early on a quiet and sunny Sunday morning and went to Ponte Vecchio, the world famous iconic bridge of Florence.
The Monumento a Benvenuto Cellini sits in the center of the downstream side of the bridge and was nicely illuminated by the morning sun. It is a tribute from the city to the master goldsmith and sculptor, a point of reference for Florentine goldsmiths, emphasizing his central role in the world of goldsmithing, to which the Ponte Vecchio has been linked for centuries. The inauguration of the monument had been scheduled for November 3, 1900 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Cellini’s birth. But Italy being Italy, the inauguration got postponed to May 26, 1901.
As so often, Wikipedia knows a lot more (in Italian) about both Benvenuto Cellini and the Monumento a Benvenuto Cellini.
