The story behind the image

On our trip to Italy in 2024 we stopped enroute at the Fortress Kufstein in Austria. In the past, we used to rush by on the nearby highway, countless times, always stunned by the sturdiness of the fortress, but never bothering to take a closer look. This time we planned for a visit.

We quickly found a garage in the city center, just a few steps away from the main entrance. We were quite early, so there were just very few tourists around. This paid off when we waited for the glass elevator, because there was no queue!

Once up in the fortress you get not just to walk the grounds of the fortress but can get an excellent overview of its history. Especially the high-security prison at the top floor of the tower is not for the faint hearted, as people were put into prison for publishing critical books and voicing their opinion. In some cases, the prisoners did not even not know the exact reasons for their sentence. These stories of the prisoners paint a dark image that left me impressed and scared, wondering whether this could happen today again?

My photo shows a view across Kufstein towards north-west, with the church St. Vitus in the front.

If you’re in the area, plan for a side trip to Kufstein and its fortress.
