The story behind the image

Finally – here’s a lady on an old CdV that belongs to our family tree, and I do know her already to a certain extent. I received the photo after talking to a relative who said she’d have lots of old photos. I asked her to send the ones that she believes to be most useful for our archive.

And then she sent 43 photos, all of them fascinating, and some of them even of very high quality. Apparently, she had taken the images from albums where they were fastened with double sided stickers. She put the stack of photos into an envelope and sent it by mail. Sadly, she did not realize that some of the images would stick together during the transport. Oh my! I carefully separated the images and repaired the few remaining damages digitally.

But here’s the story of the lady depicted. Her name is Emma Nagel, and she was born on the 3rd February 1883 in Birkenfeld (Nahe) in Germany. She got baptised (April 1883) and confirmed (April 1897) here as well.

This image was probably shot around the year 1900, so she was probably 17 or 18 years old at the time. I can’t say why she went to a photo studio in Dudweiler. Likewise, it’s yet unclear when she married her husband, Hermann Lichtenberger, a goldsmith from Idar-Oberstein. It must have been between 1900 and 1904 when her son Hermann Lichtenberger was born. In 1908, she got another child, a daughter that was baptised as Else Friederike.

Around 1913 first her son Hermann died of Tubercolosis, and she followed shortly after (in 1914), also of Tuberculosis. A real tragedy! Her daughter Else grew up with her great uncle’s family, Fritz and Sophie Nagel.

It is awesome that we now have a photo of Emma. A real gem.
