The story behind the image
Today my aunt Karin (above, in the center) would have turned 90 years. Sadly, she passed away three years ago.
But I want to take this opportunity to show you the three kids of Rudolf and Annemarie Zanzig, my grandparents. In 1981 the family visited us in Kiel, Germany, and we did a long walk along the Kiel Canal. This photo was taken by my mother at the end of the Auberg in Kiel Wik. In the back is the canal and the houses of Holtenau.
The image shows:
- My aunt Gisela Lindemann, née Zanzig (1948-2021)
- My aunt Karin Zanzig (1935-2022)
- My father Klaus Friedrich Zanzig (1938-1983)
It is one of the last photos that shows the three kids together in the 1980s. That’s simply because my father died way too early in 1983. Even better, the photo shows them in a good mood, as some of the battles between them had been resolved.
Admittedly, the photo is of mediocre technical quality due to the use of a Polaroid camera and instant film. Today, the colors have faded (a lot), and I guess the image had never been really sharp. It’s good that my mother used this camera only for a few years, and just very few important images in the archive show these issues. I like this photo anyway.
Dear aunt Karin, I am thinking of you today. R.I.P.
