The story behind the image
Here is another CdV portrait of my collection. Sadly, and as so soften, there is no indication who the lady is, and when the image was shot. At least, the name of the photographer is printed on the back – Adolf Friedrich Knoop (1823-1904) in Eutin, Germany. He used the abbreviated form of his name, A.F. Knoop for his photo studio though.
I believe this image to be shot in the 1870s because it does already carry a printed back mentioning the photographer. What’s more, the style of the portrait – without a backdrop and with an oval feathering – also indicates an early CdV. The bright red edge is quite special and rare. This style was popular in the 1860s and 1870s before golden edges became fashion. This makes it one of the oldest images in my collection.
For a long time, Knoop was the only photographer in Eutin and surroundings. There have been regular visits by traveling photographers, but Knoop was the first photographer to open a studio in the town. There’s an ad in a weekly paper dated October 1858 that announced his availablity “for photos on paper, glass, and oilcloth.”
On the 10th November 1865 he married Sophia Charlotte Henriette Behncke (1836-1914) in Eutin.
In October 1892, after more than three successful decades as a photographer, he handed his studio over to Ludwig Schöss who continued the business for at least another 15 years. It’s unclear what happened to the studio afterwards.
Knoop kept on working as a drawing teacher and died at the age of 80 years on the 21st January 1904 in Eutin.
