The story behind the image
2001. The mobile phone industry had been excited for quite a while. Finally, the Internet was going to be merged with the mobile networks. So-called Dot-com businesses where creating new services in quick succession, and they were getting backed by serious (really serious) amounts of money by investors.
Mobile phone manufacturers, on the other hand, had been able to dwarf the technology into tiny pieces and the mobile phones could, finally, lose weight and aim for new previously thought to be impossible designs.
The Ericsson R520m was such a milestone in design. Lightweight, slim, powerful, and super attractive. Admittedly, it still had that little stump at the top (aka the antenna) but this ensured ultimate quality for voice calls. I was glad to own this phone, and even if I did not use it much after switching to Siemens in 2003 or so, I liked the phone. A lot.
In 2007 I had some time on my hands and captured some of my old phones, especially the ones that were still working flawlessly. The Ericsson (unsurprisingly) powered on as if nothing had even happened.
Go figure.
