The story behind the image
Here is another shot that belongs to a set of historic postcards showing a sailing race near Kiel Schilksee likely shot during Kiel Week in 1905. This is supported by the fact postcard shows the date 1905 as part of the NPG mark in the lower right corner.
This yacht had an interesting history that leads to Hamburg.
The Hamburgischer Verein Seefahrt (HVS) was founded in 1903 by a group of sailing enthusiasts who aimed for participating in the Kiel Week 1905 in order to compete against the emperor (and beat him!) The tight timeline, however, ruled out a new build, and so the team purchased the Rainbow in England, a gaff-rigged schooner, as the first racing yacht. Iain McAllister has summarized the story of the Rainbow here.
The image captions suggests that the Hamburg actually did win the race at the Kiel Week in 1905. At least, it won a race in Kiel in that year. The Hamburg continued to serve the HVS until 1914 when it was replaced by the Hamburg II.
I think it is a stunning photo for sailing enthusiasts that illustrates the topic of (speed) sailing perfectly and a beautiful maritime decoration for your home or your office.
