The story behind the image
2007. A year ago, former telecommunications giant Siemens had sold his mobile phone unit Siemens mobile to BenQ, an electronics manufacturer from Taiwan which rebranded the business as BenQ mobile.
I knew that the Siemens product portfolio would change soon enough. I was still using a tiny Siemens S55 – the most reliable phone I had in my life, ever. To conserve this period of my life in a single photo I attached the IQP-500 camera to the phone and placed it on a white background in the studio.
The IQP-500 was proof for the changing times. The phone itself had no internal camera (like its successor, the S65) but the need for a camera was apparent. So the product team had developed this attachable camera. It was a small piece that came with a tiny bag but you could rarely see people taking pictures with it. The user experience was just too awkward (IIRC). It lacked the simplicity of shooting a photo right away.
BenQ mobile did not survive for long and filed for insolvency on the 29th September 2006.
These were rough times, and I remember them well. I am very happy that I did this shot in the summer of 2007.
