The story behind the image
Today, 120 years ago, my grandmother Edith Eugenie Gehring was born in Oldenburg, Lower Saxonia, Germany. At the age of 17, she married former navy officer Otto Schweim in June 1923, adopted his family name and moved to the city of Kiel.
This portrait shows her with her daughters Inga (my mother, on the left) and Editha in autumn 1942. She was 37 years old at the time and visibly proud of her girls. Despite the raging world war, her business – women’s lingerie and swimwear – was running well, and she was optimistic about the future. A year later the situation would get much worse, and she left Kiel. But she never lost her optimism.
I would have loved to meet her in person.
Thinking of you right now.
