The story behind the image

Recently we visited Bernburg (Saale) in Germany, a city with a long history and today the capital of the Salzlandkreis district in Saxony-Anhalt. It has a beautiful castle with a large courtyard.

We were too late to visit the museum, but Petra and Clara mounted the tall tower of the castle while I took a look around the plaza. (I am slightly afraid of heights, you know.) I saw the four statues that had been placed under a small balcony. The statues showed (from left to right) Hercules, Justitia, Fides, and Sapentia symbolizing power, justice, trust, and wisdom.

Originally, the statues stood on pedestals at the Bergstädtisches Brückentor (Mining Town Gate), a bridge over the Saale built in 1708. When the castle courtyard was redesigned in 1897, they were brought to the courtyard. In 2019, the figure of Fides was destroyed by a truck. After extensive restoration work, the four Baroque figures are since 2023 once again located in the courtyard.

A red BMW car had been parked next to the statues and acted as the perfect eye catcher.
