The story behind the image
During our various trips to southern Africa we had always been interested in the wildlife. It is fascinating to experience Zebra, Giraffe, Elephants, Rhinos, and more, in their natural habitat.
One species we were not so keen on seeing was the chacma baboon (Papio ursinus). This species is typical of southern Africa and they crossed our paths here and there but not too often. These baboons are the largest baboons, have a mostly brown-gray coat and a long, distinctive face. They are known for their eagerness to scavenge human food in tourist areas.
It is also common at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa where we saw how a male chacma baboon did a surprise attack on a tourist who carried a bag of chips. The tourist dropped the chips bag which was quickly grabbed by the baboon who ran away. On a small wall, the animal sat down and enjoyed the chips. I already had the zoom lens on my camera and could easily capture a photo of the baboon.
Fortunately, we had not been the target of this attack but learned our lesson from it and did not walk around rural areas with food in our hands.
