The story behind the image
Yesterday I shared an image showing a couple of historic houses in Elim, a former mission station with a population of about 1,500 people. in 2004, just the streets in the village had been tarred while the surrounding roads were all gravel roads. The R43, the main road to and from Elim, has been paved from 2013 to 2015 though, and it is much easier now to get to (and away from) the village. Read the full announcement.
This image shows our trusted companion for our three week road trip to South Africa, a sturdy yet comfortable Renault Mégane, at a junction near Elim. Though we did not encounter any other car in the whole area, there was a huge STOP sign – a strange sign of civilization after miles of bumpy gravel road.
Looking at satellite images, this junction seems to be still as it was back in 2004.
