The story behind the image

Rain? Certainly not my favorite photo motive. However, sometimes it can be exciting.

We had booked an excursion to the vulcano of Nisiros, a small island next to Kos. On our way to the island dark clouds hovered already over the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. The guided tour took us to the top of the crater, where we walked down to the ground. And we made it out alive! 😉 Back in Mandraki we visited the beautiful monastery Panagia tis Spilianis and took a walk through the town.

The dark clouds should have been a warning. Still, we were surprised when the rain started to pour. It was as if the heaven had literally opened its gates. Within a few seconds the streets were flooded with water coming from the few houses. We had jumped into a nearby shop to wait until the rain was over.

The location has not changed significantly over the three decades since I took the image.
