The story behind the image
With great sadness I received the news of the recent incident at the historic cable car Elevador da Glória in Lisbon, Portugal. At the time of writing, 16 people have died and 20+ people were injured in this tragedy, and my thoughts are with their families and friends.
I remember the fascination that emerged from the cable car when I visited Lisbon for the first time back in September 1988 – it was such a historic beauty! We were short on money, so we did not use it to travel the roughly 270 meters from the Praça dos Restauradores to the upper quarter Bairro Alto, a height difference of 45 meters. But we admired the impressive look before walking up the steep hill.
Wikipedia has the details on the train line as well as the incident.
