The story behind the image
We have been several times to Florence in Italy, and it has always been a great experience. Sure, there are always fellow tourists, but despite this flood of people the city could preserve its authentic charme.
My photo shows a long row of motor scooters that have been parked at the Lungarno degli Acciaiuoli. Motor scooters were a typical Italian thing, and their sound was ubiquitous across Italy. So it was a joy to see so many of them lined up here.
But things have changed.
Firstly, motor scooters are not en vogue anymore. They have been replaced by their electric powered variants and by e-bikes, and the unique sound of the Vespa is not heard as often any more.
And secondly, this parking area for the motor scooters has been removed. Today, it is a Zona Traffico Limitato, and no unauthorized vehicle may enter the zone. In fact, it is a pedestrian area now that makes it easier for the tourists to enjoy the views of the river Arno. The pharmacy has moved a few houses, to the corner of Vicolo dell’Oro.
So I really like this image of countless scooters as it is a true view of the past.
