The story behind the image
In 2012 shot this image to illustrate the Euro currency (and its ongoing crisis back then.) So I emptied my pockets and found a nice, slightly battered 1-Euro coin from Italy and several -Euro coins from Germany. The arrangement was simple enough, and so I had a nice image of Italy being surrounded by the financial power of Germany – if seen in a negative way – or Italy trumping over Germany – as it shows Leonardo da Vinci’s famous “Vitruvian Man”, a Motif that is based on a drawing by da Vinci from around 1490.
It illustrates the proportions of the human body according to the writings of the Roman architect Vitruvius (1st century BC). The human being is depicted with outstretched arms and legs, inscribed within a circle and a square. This represents the interplay of art, science, and nature, and embodies the humanistic ideal of the Renaissance: man as the measure of all things. I think this is much more attractive than Germanys state eagle.
Either way, the Euro crisis has slowly creeped out of the focus.
Still, I like this image a lot.
