The story behind the image

Eutin is a beautiful town situated in Northern Germany, between the cities of Kiel and Lübeck. It has a long history, and it is well worth a visit. Its stunning castle and gardens are located right next to the Kellersee.

This postcard image was shot and published by Knackstedt & Näther, a company from Hamburg in Germany with an exciting history that tells of the pains startups had to go through – even in 1889 when this company was founded by Wilhelm Georg Ludwig Knackstedt (1865-1916) and Hermann Gustav Näther (1866-1925). The full story can be found on Wikipedia (in German.)

The company operated a publishing and photography business. While they ran traditional photo studios in Hamburg and Cuxhaven, they also produced a variety of postcards at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Their portfolio also included stereoscopic photos of attractive locations like Eutin. These images are quite unique today as they inform us about the three-dimensional look of the locations.

Knackstedt & Närther went bankrupt in 1910, so we can safely assume that the image was shot in the first decade of the 20th century. As the back of the postcard does not provided any space for messages (just the adress), I’d estimate a production date of around 1904.

Nice.

P.S.: Here are a couple of further images of the castle, from 1910, 1910, 1932, 1942, and 1950.
