The story behind the image

This is Markree Castle in Ireland, “our castle” for one night. We had just one room in that castle for that night. But it was absolutely worth it! Our room directly overlooked the garden, and it was great to be woken up by the rising sun in the morning. After opening the curtains we could gaze at the beautiful greens in the sunlight.

The mix of age-old history and modern comfort was awesome. We also noticed the large wooden table opposite of the reception desk where countless letters were laid out for guests that stayed at the castle or would arrive soon (mind you, this was in 1999 without ubiquitous Internet, and wireless Internet was still a dream of the developers.) Add to this the friendly and helpful hotel staff, and you know why it’s been an awesome stay.

Back in the 1990s, Markree Castle was still owned by the Cooper family, who had held it for ten generations. It was known for its authentic, somewhat old-fashioned charm, with many original details, but also without today’s luxury standards. A real, hands-on castle instead of a polished boutique dream.

In 2015, Charles and Mary decided to retire and sold the castle to the Corscadden Family, a who specialize in the preservation and operation of historic castles in Ireland. They focus on romantic weddings, events, and exclusive stays. Their concept: luxury in Irish castles with charm and history. The new owners invested significantly into the renovation of the castle.

Having said that, I am happy to have experienced the hotel with Petra in 1999 with its authentic, somewhat old-fashioned charm and many original details, but also without today’s luxury standards.

Nice memories indeed.
