The story behind the image
A while ago I shared the story how we got to Atri in Italy, a typical Italian town on the countryside near the Adriatic Sea. Back in 2000, it was pretty much a blank spot on the tourist map (and probably still is today.) But it turned out to be a perfect place for us to stay. As the town sits high above its surroundings, temperatures were mild. What’s more, we enjoyed the typical Italian lifestyle without the touristic buzz from the coastal stretch.
In the town center we found the Chiesa di San Francesco, a beautiful historic church that is said to be the first church in Abruzzo built in the name and memory of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Italy and Italians. It dates back to the year 1296 but was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1688. The reconstructed church was completed in 1760.
