The story behind the image
When you travel along the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) in the Canadian Rocky Mountains between Jasper and Lake Louise, you will find several awesome locations and hikes. For example, about 55 kilometers south of Jasper, there is a short hike to Sunwapta Falls, which are fed by the Sunwapta River.
What makes Sunwapta Falls so special is the heart shaped island at the top of the falls, which is bypassed by the water of the river right before it falls for about 18 meters. That’s why you stop.
Back in 2002 I took also this alternative shot, taken from the main viewpoint on the bridge crossing the Sunwapta River. From that point you can see just the icy river embedded into the seemingly endless sea of green trees and – at the bottom of the frame – you can see the water thundering down.
