The story behind the image
We strongly recommend to visit the village of Mammoth Lakes. It is beautiful, and the surrounding nature is simply breathtaking! When you drive up Lake Mary Road you will pass the Valentine Ecological Reserve which offered stunning views to us. Untouched nature at its best!
However, it is not freely accessible. A text plate at the site explains the history of the reserve as well as the restrictions that apply:
Owned by the University of California, this reserve is used for study and teaching by scientists from all over the world. Studies conducted here investigate such topics as forest management, pollination ecology, and physiological ecology. The Reserve serves as a refuge for plants and animals as well as a benchmark against which changes in Mammoth Lakes can be measured.
The land was donated to the University by the Valentine family and is administered by UC Santa Barbara as part of the Natural Reserve System (NRS). The NRS is a network of reserves distributed throughout California and managed by the University expressly for teaching and research.
Entry is strictly regulated and by application only. Public entry is permitted only during open house events and through the Reserve’s Outdoor Science Education program for school students.
When I researched this image, I found that the winter can last looong here. There were still some patches of snow in June 2019!
